On the Bill Nye the Science Guy® show, I often added a segment that was part of that episode’s topic that I felt was important and just plain interesting. I called them “Consider The Following.” Recently, we made several more. They’re not part of a show, they’re for you, right now, here on the internet.
Click on the Media drop-down above and take a look at these new Consider The Following videos that we made with a partnership between The Planetary Society, http://planetary.org and Toshiba USA, http://Toshibausa.com. Each one is a little over a minute; I do my best to answer a question that came from one of you all, visitors to my site, Toshiba’s site, and the Exploravision Awards site, http://exploravision.org, or our Facebook pages.
When people think of scholarship awards in math and science, they often think of high school science fairs and major cash prizes to be used for college tuition and the like. This is, of course, all good. Exploravision is different. In this competition we have students in Kindergarten, middle school, and high school. We have divisions that run all the way from your first years in school up through 12th grade. This is unique and wonderful.
I can tell you as a guy who worked on airplanes, ships, oil wells, airborne electronics, and even ballet shoes, everyone who works on those things for a living got excited about science before he or she was 10 years old. That’s how it is. Ask your doctor when she or he wanted to be a doctor. Ask a reporter when he or she loved language and stories. Ask an accountant when she or he discovered numbers and counting. They all got their lifelong passion before they were 10.
Since the year 2000, I’ve been involved with the Exploravision Awards. In this competition, teams of two, three, or four students work together on an invention that they think can come into existence in the next 20 years. Each team does research and produces a website for their invention that describes the device or system and how it would work.
The Exploravison awards are funded by Toshiba USA, and they’re administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). I’ve been involved with the NSTA since the first days of the Science Guy® show. It’s an organization of expert science teachers. The Exploravision winners receive savings bonds and Toshiba computers to help them work their way through school and college. Every year Toshiba arranges for the winners to travel to Washington, DC to receive their awards and spend some time in the U.S. capital city. I get to shake every winner’s hand and usually every winner’s parents. It’s fantastic.
So click around and watch a few videos. Some of them are pretty good (you can decide which ones). Thank you for reading along here and joining me on Consider The Following.
