The Global Hackathon hub (Bengaluru/Bangalore)

In just this one week, Bangalore is host to at least four major hackathons.

It began with Microsoft Ventures' Hack Day on November 9. On Wednesday, 100 women technology professionals gathered for a hackathon sponsored jointly by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) India and the Anita Borg Institute, a non-profit organization that seeks to advance women in technology.

Thursday will see TechCrunch's hackathon, where over 400 techies will come under one roof and work all night long to build what are expected to be fabulous products. And the coming weekend will witness the Pesit-Nokia Hackathon, where nearly 200 engineering students and professionals from around Karnataka will assemble to create products for the mobile and web platforms.

Hackathons are not new to Bangalore, but given the city's rapidly growing developer strength and expertise, more and more organizations are using hackathons to further their technologies and to test them, or to make students and professionals more aware of the opportunities in software development. Some even use them to identify talented individuals to hire.
