Trojan used to take Rs 1cr from city account

A Trojan malware sent via email helped hackers siphon off Rs 1 crore from the current account of a Mulund cosmetics company, according to the chargesheet recently filed by the police. The hacking on January 31 was one of the first major online banking frauds in the city this year.

The kingpin, who is in custody, got hold of the cosmetics firm's account details with a Trojan sent in a mail that pretended to come from the income-tax department, says the 300-plus-page chargesheet. The mail was sent on January 27 to 5,000 email users across India, including Ankur Korani, 29, the director of the cosmetics company.

On January 31, the accused hacked into the firm's bank account and made 12 transactions through Real Time Gross Settlement transfers, siphoning off Rs 1 crore in 45 minutes. Money was sent from 9.15am to 10am to 12 bank accounts in Mumbai, Thane district and Uttar Pradesh. Two brothers, Fajroor Rehman Khan, 26, and Shahrukh, 23, both software engineers, were nabbed in Delhi on March 10. Twenty-one others, who either received money in their accounts or worked as middle men, are also in custody. Cops have recovered a total of Rs 75 lakh.

"The evidence includes the Trojan mails the perpetrators sent to steal the banking username and password," said Mulund police inspector Ramesh Mugutrao.

The fraud came to light when the firm's accountant tried to sign into the current account. The hacker had changed the username and password. The accountant informed Korani, who wrote in his complaint, "When we failed to sign-in into the company's current account with the first set of usernames and passwords... we used the backup... and found out about the fraud." Korani was unavailable for comment and bank officials refused to provide more details.
