iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 - Design, Screen and Power

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 30 September 2012 0 komentar

The iPhone 5 is here, and selling by the million. As expected, it features a larger screen, a faster processor and a slightly-improved camera. But the real question is - which one should you buy, the iPhone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy S3?

We’ve taken a look at the features of both phones, put them in the ring and told them only one is coming out alive. Here's how they fared…

Read more on the iPhone 5 in our round-up

Release Date and Sales
iPhone 5 - Available now, 12 September unveiling, 21 September available date
Samsung Galaxy S3 - Available now, unveiled May 2012

The iPhone 5 is out there. Early supply issues meant that demand oustripped supply, but looking at the numbers it's no surprise. The iPhone 5 sold five million units in its first weekend on sale, and two million in its first 24 hours.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has already been released, of course, and has done extremely well in its short time on this Earth. Back in July we heard that the phone had already broken through the 10 million sales barrier, making it a faster seller than either of its predecessors, the original Galaxy S and the hugely popular Galaxy S2.

By the end of 2012, analyst predictions suggest the iPhone 5 will sell around 26 million units. Samsung's own JK Shin has said he expects the Samsung Galaxy S3 to sell 30 million by the end of the year. Let's not forget that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been on sale for a lot longer, though.

Design
iPhone 5 - 7.6mm thick, metal casing, non-removable battery
Samsung Galaxy S3 - 8.6mm thick, plastic casing, removable battery

Apple has taken aggressive measures to make the iPhone 5 as thin as possible. The rear layer of glass has gone, the phone uses a teeny nano-SIM and the screen technology merges its constituent layers to squish everything down as far as possible. As a result it's just 7.6mm thick, a full millimetre less than the Samsung Galaxy S3 - which is 8.6mm thick.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 2
It's extremely impressive, and Apple has also tweaked the design of the phone to make it feel a bit less severe in the hand, despite being mega-thin. Its edges are slightly bevelled, rather than stepped, so it feels little more… hand-friendly. You still might want to grab a case for the utmost in hand comfort though. Crucially, the new etched aluminium back is much less slippy than previous versions and build quality is exceptional.

There is one slight issue, though, that's a bit of a problem if you opt for the black version of the iPhone 5. As its rear is aluminium, it is quite scratch-prone. In the black edition, any scratches are clearly visible as they reveal the bright silver of the aluminium underneath.

It's not such a problem with the white version, but has already left many new iPhone owners a little annoyed. Apple has admitted this issue, but says it's normal for an aluminium device.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 1

Samsung's great white (well, pebble blue and white) hope for 2012 has an all-plastic finish that uses a flimsy, ultra-thin back cover.  This is the one part of the phone that has caused the most criticism, as it doesn't make it feel all that much like a device you should be spending £500 on, even if in practical terms it's just as tough.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 13

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is also significantly larger than the iPhone 5, thanks to its ginormous 4.8in screen. It's 71mm wide, while the iPhone 5 is around 58mm wide. Our top recommendation is to get hold of a Galaxy S3 before buying if it's on your hit list. Some will find it a bit too big for comfort.

Accessories
iPhone 5 - new-design Earpod headphones, new Lightning power connector
Samsung Galaxy S3 - microUSB charge cable, Samsung noise isolating IEM earphones, adapter

We don't normally compare the accessories of phones when we give them the head-to-head treatment, but Apple's accessories this time around are of note. The iPhone 5's headphones have been given a completely new design, one you just don't see elsewhere.

iPhone 5 headphones

The headphones are called Earpods, and they're not the typical iPhone buds of old, or the common noise isolating IEM type either. They're small, made of plastic and are designed to nestle into your ear canals, offering a bit more noise isolation than the earbuds of old.

They're incredibly comfortable and fit securely too, and crucially for fellow train/coach/car/plane passengers, the Earpods leak much less sound to the outside world. They also sound pretty good too. Apple has completely redesigned the sound ports to boost bass and even out mid-range. The result is a surprisingly good listen, with good bass response and a notably wide sound stage. That said, they still don't block out external noise enough for our liking and we're only talking good for a £25 set of earphones - don't ditch your custom IEMs just yet.

The power cable of the iPhone 5 is also different, using the new 8-pin socket rather than the 30-pin type that has been in use for years. Apple calls it Lightning, which linguistically fits-in rather nicely with its Thunderbolt computer port. You also get a power adapter for the cable and a SIM removal tool.

Samsung's Galaxy S3 is more ordinary in its approach, though no less useful. It features a microUSB charge cable, a power adapter to plug this cable into and a standard pair of Samsung-branded IEM noise isolating earphones. The latter offer some external noise isolation but aren't actually that great when it comes to sound quality.

Screen
iPhone 5 - 4in IPS, 1,136 x 640 resolution
Samsung Galaxy S3 - 4.8in Super AMOLED, 1,280 x 720 resolution

Every generation of iPhone since the original of the species back in 2007 has uses the same size screen - 3.5in. That has all changed with the iPhone 5. It now has a widescreen 4in display of 1,136 x 640 pixels. Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

It's this change of screen style that will make the iPhone 5 able to offer a larger screen without making the phone any wider. Pixel density is the same as the iPhone 4S too, although the new aspect will make it much better to watch movies on.

Many apps have already been tweaked to support the new longer screen while older ones will just leave bars where the extra pixels now live.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 8

The Samsung Galaxy S3 cares a lot less about how wide it is than the iPhone 5. With a gigantic 4.8in display, the Galaxy will be too wide for some hands - it's a whopping 7.6cm across. Screen pixel density will be comparable to the new iPhone, though, with 720 x 1,280 spread across the display.

Each phone uses quite a different screen tech type. The Samsung Galaxy S3 features a Super AMOLED panel, while the iPhone 5 uses a new take on the IPS technology that has been used in iPads and iPhones for years.

Super AMOLEDs offer superb black response and vivid colours, but IPS screens tend to look a little more natural. In our recent comparison of the Samsung and the HTC One X, we found in favour of the HTC's IPS type.

In bright sunlight, the iPhone 5 is the clear winner of the two. It's less reflective, offers greater maximum brightness, supplying much better visibility in this sort of challenging situation. In a dark room, though, AMOLED comes into its own.

Software
iPhone 5 - iOS 6
Samsung Galaxy S3 - Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (4.1 incoming), TouchWiz UI

The battle of iOS versus Android is one we've been watching ever since 2008, when Android was born. Android has changed a good deal more than iOS in that time, and is finally getting close to becoming as slick and quick as iOS. Apple's OS has always been pretty nippy.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 isn't quite there yet, as in most territories it still uses Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich rather than the latest Jelly Bean version. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean sees the start of an initiative called Project Butter. This is designed to take full use of the processor power available, with the aim of running Android at a solid 60fps.

Android offers more integrated features an flexibility than iOS too. You can even change the way your phone responds to basic functions, such as replacing the SMS app with a third-party one. Apple doesn't let you do anything like this. And, of course, the home screens of Android give you much more control over how your phone looks than the rigid app menu layout of iOS.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 also benefits from a blunder made by Apple. iOS got rid of the Google mapping solution that had been in use since the early days of iPhones, replacing it with Apple's own stab. At present, Apple's new Maps app doesn't work too well though. Its maps are out of date, with towns mis-named and many roads simply missing.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 uses good old Google Maps, which works a treat. And actually features maps from this decade.

Samsung's phone also benefits from a few tweaks added-in with the TouchWiz UI. Most notably, it brings features that were only introduced in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. These include monitoring for eye movement before switching off the backlight and integrated NFC pairing.

Power
iPhone 5 - 1GB RAM, A6 processor, power TBC
Samsung Galaxy S3 - 1GB RAM, Exynos 4412, Quad-core 1.4GHz

One area where the Samsung Galaxy S3 might beat the next iPhone is its processor's figures. The Samsung Galaxy S3 uses the impressive Exynos 4412 chip, which has four cores and runs at 1.4GHz.

Annoyingly, Apple hasn't revealed in-depth technical information about the CPU. At present, we only know that it is two times faster than the iPhone 4S's chip, which has a dual-core 1GHz CPU and PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics. Will it be quad-core? Will it offer face-melting speed? You'll have to come back in a while to find out. We'll update this feature as soon as we have the full details.

Connectivity
iPhone 5 - new proprietary 8-pin connector, no microSD, microSIM
Samsung Galaxy S3 - microUSB, microSD, microSIM

Perhaps the most earth-shattering change in the iPhone 5 is that it rejects the 30-pin connector used across iPods, iPads and iPhones in favour of a much-smaller 8-pin model. This is comparable in size to the microUSB standard, although it's not exactly the same as microUSB. Apple is never keen on going with the bog-standard option when it can make its own version.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 5

The problem with changing connector is that the new iPhone will be incompatible with current iPhone docking accessories - not good news if you own something like a B&W Zeppelin. However, Apple does offer a connector that acts as a bridge between the old 30-pin socket and the new 8-pin one.

It's all change, but the iPhone 5 doesn't bring expandable memory to the series - no iPhone to date has offered a memory card slot. You're also mostly tied to iTunes when transferring content like music and pictures to the phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is pretty much the polar opposite in its approach. It lets you use microSD cards and uses the microUSB standard. Handily, it's MHL compliant, too, able to output HD video with surround sound audio to an HDMI port when used with the right cable. Unlike the iPhone, the Samsung doesn't rely on sync software to transfer files directly either - you can drag and drop files when plugged into a computer over USB.

Cameras
iPhone 5 - 8MP, LED flash
Samsung Galaxy S3 - 8MP, LED flash

Although many elements of the iPhone 5 have been improved hugely over its predecessor, the camera has only been given a slight upgrade. It's still an 8-megapixel sensor, and it still uses a pretty standard LED flash. Its aperture is f/2.4 and it uses a five-element lens. Like the iPhone 4S, the sensor offers backside illumination.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 15

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has an 8-megapixel sensor and reams of features including image stabilisation, touch focus, 1080p video capture and an LED flash. However, its image quality is at best on-par with the iPhone 4S's camera (and outperformed by it in some conditions) and we hope that the iPhone 5 will offer some significant improvements.

The iPhone 5 also offers an impressive looking panorama mode - just tap and pan to automatically create an image. Unlike other similar panorama modes we've seen this one keeps the full size image, giving you up to 28 megapixel images - nice.

Battery
iPhone 5 - 1440mAh
Samsung Galaxy S3 - 2100mAh

The iPhone 5 hasn't gotten a huge battery increase over its predecessor.  The iPhone 4S has a 1430mAh unit, and the iPhone 5 a 1440mAh unit. It'll last for 40 hours of audio playback, or up to eight hours of talk time, with 3G enabled.

Also, like previous iPhones you can't swap out the battery on the iPhone 5, so if you're caught short without power you're done for... well, your phone is anyway.

Samsung made a particularly strong effort with the latest Galaxy's battery, outstripping most of its rivals by around 20 per cent. For example, the HTC One X uses an 1800mAh unit and the Sony Xperia S a 1750mAh battery. Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 16

In spite of the larger screen and only slight capacity increase, the iPhone 5 betters the stamina offered by the iPhone 4S. Apple must have put some real effort into this.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5 17
Verdict
More than is often the case, the battle between the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 is the very definition of the case between iOS and Android, between Apple and Google. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is more flexible, with expandable memory and a more malleable OS. However, the metal body of Apple's phone feels a lot more premium, and is a much friendlier design for those with less than giant hands. And with the larger 4in screen, it won't feel quite so tiny next to the Samsung Galaxy S3, either.

Galaxy S4 In Early 2013? Samsung Shoots Down Rumor Via Tweet

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Galaxy S4 Simmer down, Samsung fans.
With a single tweet, Samsung managed to save fans of its popular Galaxy series of smartphones months of the sort of gadget anxiety Apple lovers have grown accustom to. On Tuesday, the company revealed that it wouldn't be launching a new smartphone (unofficial called "Galaxy S4") earlier than perviously expected.

The rumor -- that Samsung was preparing to unveil the successor to the hit Galaxy S3 "superphone" in February 2013 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona -- apparently began with an anonymously sourced report in the Korea Times about a February announcement and a March release date for the next Galaxy phone.
Samsung, however, was quick and brutal to nip the rumor in the bud. It fired off the following tweet from its Korean-language handle:
According to Google Translate, this means, basically, that the rumor is false.
Samsung's response is notable in how starkly it differs from how Apple handles rumors. Namely, Apple does everything in its power to avoid talking to the media about its forthcoming products, leaving it to rumor blogs to hype up fans. Samsung, on the other hand, apparently isn't afraid to kill a rumor if it's way off base.
Ahead of the launch of the iPhone 4S in 2011, the wildest speculation suggested that Apple would use the launch event to unveil two handests, a high-end iPhone 5 and lower-end iPhone 4S. This never happened, of course. Apple could've straightened out the confusion beforehand, but chose not to. The company later blamed the runaway hype surrounding the event for lower-than-expected profits that quarter.
As for real news on the next Samsung flagship phone: Samsung did announced new computer chips for the "next-generation mobile devices" on Tuesday, meaning that the "Galaxy S4" (or whatever it'll be called) is coming eventually, if not in early 2013. Expect Samsung to hold off on the tweets when those rumors start flying.

Facebook Manners

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 28 September 2012 0 komentar

How you present yourself on Facebook says a lot about who you are-just like what you say and do at school or with your friends. In all public places, online and off, it’s important to represent yourself as the kind of person you want to be.

Think Before You Post

It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and write or do something that may seem hilarious at the time. But remember, what you say can really hurt someone, or come back to haunt you. Think before you post. It only takes a second or two. Ask yourself if you really want to say it. Make sure you don’t mind if your friends, classmates, or teachers hear about it later.
Also remember that any information you post – whether in a comment, a note, or a video chat – might be copied, pasted, and distributed in ways that you didn't intend. Before you post, ask yourself - would I be OK if this content was shared widely at school or with my future employer?
At the same time, we all make mistakes. If you find yourself wishing you hadn’t said or done something, it’s never too late to apologize.

23 games to be launched with Wii U on November 18

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 27 September 2012 0 komentar

Nintendo's Wii U will launch with 23 games, the company announced yesterday.
Nintendo, of course, will be leading the charge with four titles on store shelves the day its console launches on November 18. Chief among those titles is New Super Mario Bros. U, the latest installment in that franchise's long and storied history. Nintendo's Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, Nintendo Land, and Sing Party will also launch on November 18.
The Wii U will also get support from several third-party publishers, like Activision, which will offer four titles on launch day, including Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Electronic Arts will offer up FIFA Soccer 13 on launch day, and Sega will launch Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Nintendo earlier this month announced that a basic Wii U setup, featuring 8GB of memory, the console, and the Wii U Gamepad, will cost $299.99. A Deluxe set including all of that plus more memory, Nintendo Land, and a charging pad, will sell for $349.99.
At the event announcing the Wii U's pricing, Nintendo declined to announce any launch-day titles. Instead, the company said that it will have 50 titles available between November 18 and the end of March 2013.
In yesterday's announcement, Nintendo listed over 50 games that will either launch on November 18 or fit into the launch window -- defined by the company as ending March 31.

Fuel your cars with whiskey 'leftovers'

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 26 September 2012 0 komentar
Bacteria fed on whiskey 'leftovers' can now be used to fuel vehicles.

A Scottish company has signed a 'first of its kind deal' in the world to turn by-products from its distillery into fuel for cars.

The Tullibardine distillery in Perthshire has linked up with a spin-out company from Napier University in Edinburgh, as they plan to use bacteria to feed on the "leftovers" from the whiskey making process.

This will produce butanol which can be used to fuel vehicles, the 'BBC News' reported.

More than 90 per cent of the stuff that comes out of a whiskey distillery is not just whiskey, but leftovers like draff and pot ales - both are produced in the early stages of the process.

They are high in sugar and are currently used for things like fertiliser and cattle feed.

Napier University's Biofuel Research Centre (BfRC) has already shown that the bacteria can feed on whiskey by-products to produce butanol - a direct replacement for vehicle fuel.
Now the spin-out company, Celtic Renewables, and independent malt whiskey producer Tullibardine have signed a memorandum of understanding.
They intend to apply the process to thousands of tonnes of the distillery's leftovers.

"Our partnership with Tullibardine is an important step in the development of a business which combines two iconic Scottish industries - whiskey and renewables," Professor Martin Tangney, founder of Celtic Renewables, said.

"This project demonstrates that innovative use of existing technologies can utilise resources on our doorstep to benefit both the environment and the economy," said Tangney.

SOS message on crash! by helmet

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The brainchild of an India-born chef for top cyclists, a new 'life saver' bike helmet that connects with your phone and alerts emergency services in case of an accident is set to hit the markets soon.

The potentially life saving smartphone app, which can detect a crash and then alert the emergency services, has been designed for bike riders.

The clever application pairs through Bluetooth with a motion detector which is attached to the rider's helmet and senses the crash.

The invention has been created by Oklahoma-based software company ICEdot in the US.

The detector, named the ICEdot Crash Sensor, can even evaluate the severity of the crash depending on the force of the rider's fall, the Daily Mail reported.

Chris Zenthoefer, ICEdot's CEO, said: "The idea came from Biju Thomas, a prominent chef for a lot of top cyclists. He was on a solo ride and crashed and thought if the crash had been any worse, nobody would have know where he was located."

"We were then introduced and it became clear that the pairing of his idea with ICEdot existing technology were a perfect match," Zenthoefer said.

Following an accident the app will prompt the phone to sound an alarm and a countdown, which can be set to between 15 and 60 seconds, is initiated.

If the alarm is not deactivated the app will contact an SOS service and relay vital information.

Using GPS coordinates the device can reveal the user's location and the severity of their condition.

Foxconn's iPhone factories a hell???!!!!

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 25 September 2012 0 komentar

ZHENGZHAO, Henan province, China--If you want to understand why iPhones are made in this corner of the world, look no further than Li Yue.
When I met the effervescent 21-year-old, she was lined up at a kiosk outside the gates of the massive assembly plant owned by Foxconn. Li, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jean shorts and carrying a pink parasol to beat the heat on a scorcher of a June day, was among a group of a dozen or so candidates applying for a job with the Taiwanese firm. Not a specific job, mind you. Any job.
It's not as if Li, who just finished her first year as a student at Henan Police College, didn't have much going for her. She was bright and engaging. She spoke more than passing English. And she conveyed an eagerness to get started.
Foxconn granted her wish. But instead of landing a job at the plant here, which employs more than 190,000 workers, Li boarded a bus that afternoon for Taiyuan, in the Shanxi Province, a 10-hour ride away. It may have been more than she bargained for.
Late Sunday night, the Taiyuan factory, with more than 79,000 workers, was roiled by violence. Foxconn said "a personal dispute between several employees escalated into an incident involving some 2,000 workers," leading Foxconn to suspend operations at the plant for a day. While Chinese authorities are investigating the cause of the riot, Foxconn said that it "appears not to have been work-related." Apple declined to comment on the riot.
From rocks to recycling: The life of an iPhone
Tomorrow: We look at the environmental concerns raised by mining for the raw materials of the iPhone and what happens to iPhones when people get rid of them.
The weekend violence is the latest in a growing list of incidents that have heightened concerns over conditions in factories that make iPhones and other high-volume tech products. There have been employee suicides, explosions at two plants that make Apple gadgets, and reports of harsh working conditions. A New York Times investigation of the manufacturing of Apple products in China in January painted a picture of a company that wants to improve the workplace at its partners such as Foxconn but "falters when it conflicts with crucial supplier relationships or the fast delivery of new products."
There are other, less obvious issues adding to tensions in these teeming facilities. Wages may be high compared with other jobs in China, but they are sometimes barely enough to cover rent in the huge dormitories in which employees typically live, and still leave workers with money to send to family members in villages who live on even less. Managers can subject employees to harsh public ridicule that would be unthinkable in Western workplaces. And employees are often reluctant to make waves simply because there are so many other people who would happily trade places with them.
"The employees always say the people outside want a job," one employee told me in an interview, "and the people inside want to quit."

Mere love affair ia never a reason. If you are a student of NGI and if you fail in an internal exam or you have an arrear then you are treated like animals.Daily you have to undergo severe insult.Staffs will scold you daily and severe punishments will be given. If you argue or say something against it then you will be failed in the next semester laboratory exam, even your internals marks will be cut and life will become miserable in the college.

Previously our college timing was from 9.30 to 4.30 and now it is from 9am to 4.30pm.
The dayscholars from ottapalam have to come by 6.30am and reach home by 7.15pm and an hour less for palakkad students.near about 13 hours we are out then how  will they study??

Previously we had alternate saturdays leave now its only 3rd sat and if any other holiday comes in between then 3rd sat will be working.
As per the new rules students having arrear should come on sundays too.

Each and every student is undergoing severe mental stress.

Such suicides may happen again if the rules are not changed,we humbly request to make these changes.

1.College timings should be made as earlier and alternate Saturdays leave should be given mandatorily
.
2.No classes on sunday, students having arrears should not be treated differently, in spite of sundays  arrear classes can be kept during library/net hour or last hours of Thursday and Friday.

Times Of India Described it like this:
COIMBATORE: A 20-year-old college student committed suicide by hanging at his college hostel campus near Kaliyapuram on the outskirts of the city on Sunday night. His body was found at a newly constructed building by a construction worker on Monday morning. Police suspect unrequited love led him to take the extreme step.

The deceased was identified as C Kapildev of Vikkiramangalam near Usilampatti in Madurai district. Police said Kapildev was studying third year BE (Aeronautical Engineering) at Nehru Institute of Engineering and Technology in Thirumalayampalayam. He was staying at the college hostel situated at Kaliyapuram.

The police had checked the deceased's phone calls and messages from his mobile phone based on which they suspect unrequited love to be the cause. His roommates told police that Kapildev had been depressed over the past week and he could not sleep. On Sunday, around 3.30 pm, he had gone out and did not return. He used to spend most of his free time chatting with a girl over phone. So, his roommates did not miss him and went to bed.

On Monday morning, a construction worker discovered his body at the construction site that was on the hostel campus. He immediately alerted the college management who informed KG Chavadi police. They rushed to the spot and sent the body to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for an autopsy.

"He had made phone calls and sent messages to the same girl before committing suicide. We did not find any suicide note from his hostel room. We are probing," said inspector Murali, Madukkarai.

After china now its Iran.Iran has transferred all its government agencies to a domestically formed intranet, limiting the access in the name of security reasons. The country will now push the citizens into this ‘intranet’ platform and the government has also blocked Google Search and its mail service inside the country.

According to Reuters, Iran's deputy communications and technology minister Ali Hakim-Javadi said: “all governmental agencies and offices have been connected to the national information network. According to the minister, the system would be fully implemented by March 2013, when all the citizens and networks inside the country will be under domestic internet. But it’s not been made clear that whether the people would still be given access to World Wide Web.
Also a government official said that "Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice" and this will kick in "within a few hours."

FDI wont hurt small Traders says PM

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 22 September 2012 0 komentar

PM on FDI in retail & fuel hike decisionNEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday defended his government's fresh economic reforms, saying these were needed to boost investor confidence domestically and globally.
In a nationally televised address, the prime minister accused the opposition of misleading the people and said the time had come to embrace "hard decisions" to revive the country's economy.

"The time has come for hard decisions. For this I need your trust, your understanding and your cooperation," he said, comparing the situation with what prevailed in 1991 when India embraced sweeping economic reforms.

"We are at a point where we can reverse the slowdown in our growth. We need a revival in investor confidence domestically and globally," he said. "The decisions we have taken recently are necessary for this purpose."

The prime minister's speech came hours after the Trinamool Congress quit his government over the decisions to hike diesel prices, cap the supply of cooking gas cylinders and allow FDI in multi-brand retail trade.

In his speech, Manmohan Singh defended all three decisions.

He said that subsidy on petroleum products had grown enormously, and would have been over Rs 200,000 crore this year.

"If we had not acted, it would have meant a higher fiscal deficit, that is, an unsustainable increase in government expenditure vis-a-vis government income.

"If unchecked, this would lead to a further steep rise in prices and a loss of confidence in our economy."

He said India had faced a similar situation in 1991 when "nobody was willing to lend us even small amounts of money".

"We are not in that situation today, but we must act before people lose confidence in our economy."

On the decision to limit to six the number of cooking gas cylinders a family can get in a year, the prime minister said "almost half of our people ... actually use only six cylinders or less".

"We have ensured they are not affected. Others will still get six subsidised cylinders, but they must pay a higher price for more," adding the price of kerosene, the poor man's fuel, remained unchanged.

Manmohan Singh denied accusations that allowing foreign direct investment in retail would hurt small traders.

He said that organised and modern retailing was already present in India and growing.

In Delhi, he said, despite the increasing number of shopping centres, there was a three fold increase in the number of small shops.

"The fear that small retailers will be wiped out is completely baseless."

Diesel price hike was needed to cover losses

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Friday a Rs.17 per litre hike in diesel price was needed to cover the losses and that the government only partially passed on the burden to the common people.

"We raised the price of diesel by just Rs.5 per litre instead of the Rs.17 that was needed to cut all losses on diesel," the prime minister said in an address to the nation.

The prime minister pointed out that much of diesel is used by big cars and sports utility vehicles (SUVs) owned by the rich and by factories and businesses.

"Should the government run large fiscal deficits to subsidise them," he asked.

The prime minister said taxes on petrol were reduced by Rs.5 per litre to prevent a rise in petrol prices.

"We did this so that the crores of middle class people who drive scooters and motorcycles are not hit further."

On the cap on subsidised LGP cylinders

On the decision to put a cap of 6 subsidised cylinders per year, Singh said, "Almost half of our people, who need our help the most, actually use only 6 cylinders or less. We have ensured they are not affected."

"We did not touch the price of kerosene which is consumed by the poor," he said.

He said despite the recent increase, diesel and cooking gas prices were lower in India than neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.

"The total subsidy on petroleum products will still be Rs.160 thousand crore. This is more than what we spend on health and education together. We held back from raising prices further because I hoped that oil prices would decline," he said.  (IANS)

NEW DELHI: Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra today said it is expecting to produce 2,500 units of its latest compact sports utility vehicle Quanto in October.
"For October, our production plan is 2,500 units of Quanto. After selling these vehicles, we hope to get more demand for the vehicle," Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Chief Executive (Automotive Division) Pravin Shah told reporters here.

The company has a combined production capacity of 7,000 units per month for its multi utility vehicle Xylo and Quanto, which was launched yesterday in Mumbai. It will be produced at its Nashik facility, he added.

"Currently, we are producing around 2,500 units of Xylo. Rest we can use for Quanto... We will not have much problem in ramping up the capacity of Quanto as many of the parts are common with Xylo," Shah said.

The company today unveiled the Quanto here. It is priced between Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 7.57 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

M&M will start exporting the Quanto to neigbhouring countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, besides South Africa to begin with in the next three-four months, which will be followed by Europe and Latin America.

The sub four-meter Quanto is powered by a three-cylinder 1.5 litre diesel engine. The company has invested Rs 100 crore in developing the five-seater Quanto.

A sub four-metre Verito sedan will hit the roads by the end of this financial year, Shah said.

Meanwhile, the auto major said that it does not forsee any impact of the diesel price hike on its compact SUV Quanto, as the easing interest rate will take care of any psychologically effect on potential buyers.
"We do not forsee any impact despite the diesel price hike as the interest rate is easing. So the impact will get mitigated," M&M GM marketing R K Mitra said in Kolkata on the sidelines of launch of Quanto.

M&M also plans to launch Rexton sports utility vehicle from its South Korean subsidiary SsangYong Motor's stable and Mahindra Reva NXR electric car ahead of the Diwali.

"We will launch the high-end SUV Rexton. It will be the first Ssangyong product that we will launch sometime by Diwali", Mahindra and Mahindra, Senior Vice President Marketing (Automotive Sector) Vivek Nayer told reporters in Chennai.

He said Rexton would be a high-end SUV above the Mahindra "XUV500" and would compete with Toyota Fortuner and General Motors' Captiva.

Sensex, Nifty hit 14-month highs

Mumbai: With the government sending out a bold message that there was absolutely no room for any rollback of the reforms process it launched last week, the Dalal Street turned euphoric.

The 30-share BSE Sensex soared 404 points to end the day at 18,752.83, up 2.20 per cent, while the broader 50-stock NSE Nifty jumped 137 points to close at 5,691.15, up 2.46 per cent.

"Sentiment was beaten out of shape, so this rally was expected. The strength in large caps indicates the rally will continue. Targets of 5,900-5,950 on Nifty are possible now," independent analyst Sarvendra Srivastava said.

On Thursday, the government went ahead with the notification of foreign investment in multi-brand retail, aviation and broadcasting sectors despite the nation-wide strike called by the opposition. Today, it went a step ahead and cut withholding taxes on overseas borrowings by local companies, sparking hopes that more reforms are in the offing to revive capital markets and also the overall economy.
The withholding tax cut boosted infrastructure stocks such as Larsen & Toubro, which are expected to especially benefit from easier access to overseas funding markets.

"Withholding tax cut is a significant thing as it reduces the cost of borrowing for corporates," said Sandip Sabharwal, chief executive officer for portfolio management services at Prabhudas Lilladher. "Whenever market sentiment improves and outlook on economy improves, normally, financials lead the rally.

Excessive allocation to defensives and cash is now getting reallocated," he added.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced it will begin fining telecom operators who do not comply with mobile number portability (MNP) regulations. The fines range from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 per non-complied request, and will come into effect 60 days from now to give operators a chance to comply.

Portability Regulations 2009. Specifically, the TRAI amendment reads:

"In order to ensure compliance of MNP regulations by access providers, the authority has decided to amend the regulations to incorporate the provisions for levying financial disincentives where contravention is established in rejection of porting requests and also in the timelines specified in the regulations."

"In cases where deviation is noticed by TRAI in the specified timelines by a service provider, a financial disincentive of Rs 5,000 will be levied for each contravention whereas in cases where contravention is established in rejection of porting request by a service provider, a financial disincentive of an amount of Rs.10,000 will be levied for each rejection."

According to TRAI, nearly 60 million subscribers have requested their operators for mobile number porting since January last year, however, a significant portion of these requests have reportedly been rejected the operators on ‘frivolous grounds.'
