iPhones and iPads are popular not only among tech enthusiasts, but also among thieves in New York, or so the city's mayor believes.
As crime rate in New York City rose in 2012, the mayor Michael Bloomberg pointed out the reason behind this surge - Apple's iPhones and iPads. In his weekly radio show, the city's mayor said that the uptick in the number of iPhones and iPads being stolen was responsible for the marginal increase in the total number of crimes in 2012, reports The New York Times.
The press secretary of Mayor Bloomberg said that if the incidents related to iPhones and iPads were taken out of the equation, the crime rate for 2012 would fall in comparison to last year. The annual crime index compiled by the city consists of acts like murders, grand larcenies and robberies.
Till December 24, 2012, New York Police Department (NYPD) saw 3,484 more crimes than they witnessed in 2011. However, 3,890 more instances related to iPhones and iPads were reported this year. The mayor said the figure he quoted did not include any other internet-connected mobile device, including Samsung's successful Galaxy range or Google's Nexus series.
He provided owners of iPhones and iPads tips to keep their devices safe from thefts, such as keeping them in secure, hard-to-access pockets.
