Google's Indoor Maps Feature in Singapore

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 20 Februari 2013 0 komentar

Google launched its indoor maps feature in Singapore Tuesday, making the city state the second country in Asia to have it.

Android phone users will be able to use the online mapping system to help themselves find their way inside shopping malls and large buildings, reported Xinhua citing Straits Times.

Such information includes floor plans and basic walking directions for any building which has submitted its indoor maps to Google. It uses existing Wi-Fi access points to pinpoint a user's location and follows his movement as he travels across different floors. In Singapore, 22 malls have signed up for its launch. Changi Airport is not on the list.

The application was launched in the US in November 2011, with shopping malls and airports among the first to be mapped. Japan was the first Asian country to use it in heavily populated cities such as Tokyo and Osaka.

Indoor maps for malls, however, were not new in Singapore. In 2010, SingTel launched an application which pinpoints a user's location and gives directions to shops on its detailed floor plan and store directory.

With Google Maps, however, there is no need to launch a separate application to view an indoor map. It swops seamlessly from outdoor maps to indoor floor plans when users zoom into the building on the screen. To keep the application updated, businesses can upload their floor plans to Google.

Virtual Girlfriends

This new appplication seems to be straight out of the cupid’s book guiding lonely hearts to find love. From mobile application to online sites, various tools are now giving lonely men a chance to have that 'girlfriend experience', though virtually, reports TOI.

The recent one is the site where you can purchase a virtual girlfriend, who in turn will post messages on the social networking sites, giving impression of long distance relationship.

And in South Korea, not too long ago, software engineers had fallen for a particular phone application, which would call them at late hours during work to give them the comfort that a woman cared for them. It is quite same in India too, where one such app can send love messages from a woman’s profile, giving that comfort you longed for.

HTC One:Ultrapixels Explained

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The HTC One has one feature that’s hogging all the limelight is the camera which features a sensor with a resolution of 4 megapixels, but these aren’t just any pixels, they’re Ultrapixels! Just like Nokia before it, HTC has introduced a new term to our daily imaging vernacular, but fear not, because we are going to break the term down for you and explain just how effective (or not) it is going to be.

For starters, the physical size of the sensor in the HTC One is the same as the sensor in the Nokia Lumia 920, a measly 1/3 of an inch. Going by regular definitions, this is definitely a very small sensor when compared to what we find in regular cameras, which is why cellphones have often yielded the least detailed images up until recently.

Pretty much every manufacturer, be it a camera maker or a phone maker has been heavily vested in perpetuating the megapixel race, and HTC is the first to break out of it, by focussing on delivering images that have exceptional detail along with rich vibrant colours. When a tiny camera sensor gets packed with big megapixel numbers, what happens is that the individual pixels become too small in size. When these individual photo-sites become too small, they’re incapable ot capturing light in the most effective and efficient ways.

HTC One aims to make good first impression with all-metal body

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 19 Februari 2013 0 komentar

The all-aluminum frame for the new HTC One.

Take that, Apple.

HTC believes it has one-upped its competition -- including the marquee iPhone 5 -- with its latest flagship smartphone. The HTC One features an all-aluminum construction that the company believes will set the phone apart at retail stores.

"This takes premium to the next level," Scott Croyle, HTC's design guru, said in an interview with CNET. "It feels more premium than anything I've felt out in the market."

Croyle talked about the importance of making a good first impression with consumers, something that has become critical with HTC's competitors all stepping up their game in regards to the quality of their phones. While HTC can't outspend Apple and Samsung Electronics on the marketing front, the company can at least try to compete on the store shelves.
Croyle wasn't shy about comparing the One's "solid" feel to the competition, although he didn't mention names.

His focus on the all-metal attributes is a direct shot at the iPhone 5, which similarly uses aluminum but has a top and bottom row on the back that's constructed of glass, enabling the antenna inside to broadcast and receive signals. The HTC One, however, worked around that by building the antenna into the metal back of the phone, allowing for a more seamless looking device.

Technology companies love their buzzwords, and HTC has one for that process: zero-gap construction.
"You take the parts and join them together so you get that perfect fit and finish we've always promised," Croyle said.

He also referenced the cheaper plastic feel of other smartphones, likely a reference to Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S3. While the phone has been a blockbuster hit and is universally well regarded, some have complained about its flimsy feel.

HTC has long used metal in its phones, dating back to the Legend, which made its first appearance almost exactly three years ago. While the Legend was constructed out of a unibody aluminum case, the back of the bottom "chin" was plastic to enable the antennas to work.

The all-aluminum unibody case for the HTC One.

The HTC One takes the love of aluminum even further. Croyle said it takes roughly 200 minutes to cut and process the front and rear parts of each phone.

"There are multiple panels, but they feel like one part," he said.

While the back of the phone is part of the antenna, Croyle doesn't foresee any reception issues like the iPhone 4, which used the metal frame around the phone as its antenna, causing some signal issues when held the wrong way. Croyle promised there wouldn't be an "antennagate" with the One.

The design team sat down a year ago and talked extensively with the engineering team to figure out a concept that would work. After the engineering team brought up the idea of using the back itself as part of the antenna, the teams got to work on several concept models of what would eventually become the One. Croyle touted the One as a big engineering breakthrough.

Croyle hopes the higher quality parts will get people to take another look at HTC, something consumers haven't done much of in 2012. Despite getting positive reviews for its own One X flagship phone last year, the company failed to sell enough to reverse the slowdown in revenue and profits. Still, Croyle believes people will welcome the unique design.

"The smartphone industry has kind of plateaued in regards to experience," he said. "Now was the time to look at people and how they use their phones, and focus on where we can provide innovation."

Samsung outs cheaper, WiFi-only Galaxy Camera

Leaning towards the Samsung Galaxy Camera but don't think that cellular connectivity is of much use for you? Well, Sammy's just taken the covers off a new variant, dubbed the EK-GC110, forsaking the 3G / 4G modem and making the device more affordable in the process. Other key specs remain the same as its sibling, the EK-GC100, including a 16.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, 21x optical zoom, 4.8-inch display, 1.4GHz quad-core processor and Android 4.1. The all-important pricing and availability information is still TBA, however. And while this WiFi-only iteration is even less likely to make you set your smartphone aside, hopefully it won't hurt your wallet so much.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd today launched the Samsung GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi), the newest addition to the GALAXY Camera lineup. Like the original GALAXY Camera, the GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi) combines high performance photographic features with Android™ 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS and dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity, making shooting, enjoying, editing and sharing images from a single device easier than ever before.

With the GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi), users can use the dual-band Wi-Fi technology embedded in the device to share photos with family and friends through email, social networks or mobile communication services like Samsung ChatON right from the device, as well as enjoy the luxury of backing-up pictures instantly to cloud services when connected.

• With a 21x Super Long Zoom lens and a super-bright 16M BSI CMOS, the GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi) combines superior compact camera hardware with a simple and comfortable design. Taking professional-looking images is made easy with 19 different integrated Smart Modes, which allow users to choose from a series of preset scenario options such as Light trace or Action freeze to ensure the perfect shot is captured every time.

• The GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi) revolutionizes photography with its Android™ 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS, providing the familiarity of the largest Smartphone OS with advanced picture taking ability. The GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi) comes preloaded with powerful photo and video editing tools, 'Photo Wizard' and 'Video Editor,' allowing for professional style edits to be made right from the GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi).

• Connectivity for the Samsung GALAXY Camera (Wi-Fi) is supported by a quad-core processor that enables fast web-browsing and multi-tasking, as well as high-speed image processing without a significant impact on battery life. The stylish curves of the camera's ergonomic design further aid image capture by placing all of the key controls right at your fingertips.

LG's 5.5" Optimus G Pro is Coming to the US

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Just in the nick of time for a grand debut at Mobile World Congress next week, LG announced this morning that the successor to their hit Optimus G — the Optimus G Pro — will roll out to North America sometime during Q2. With more than a million Optimus G phones sold since its debut in September of 2012, LG has already promised users that many beloved features (and a few new ones) will be available once the Optimus G Pro hits stores sometime in spring.

Riding the wave of the big smartphone trend this year, the Optimus G Pro boasts a 5.5-inch display, jacked up more than half an inch than its forebear in the screen real estate department and claiming the title as the biggest LG phone in their catalog. But don't worry about sacrifices to resolution — LG promised a full HD display boasting 1,920 by 1,080 pixels and 400 ppi. The phone's guts have also received an update, featuring a 1.7 GHz quad-core Snap Dragon processor, 2GB of RAM and a welcome 32GB of storage.

The cameras are also suped-up, with a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with HD recording capabilities and a respectable 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera for chatting and consistency in the phones "Dual Recording" feature — allowing users to use the front and rear cameras for simultaneous recording.

The phone will run on Android 4.1.2 Jellybean and feature a lot of Optimus G's best-loved features. LG has promised the Optimus G Pro will feature QSlide, which allows users to view two screens at once, and LiveZooming, which helps zoom in on phone features up to 5 times the normal size. New features include an ability to create 360-degree panoramas and the aforementioned picture in picture recording abilities.

Rumblings of the Optimus G Pro's US debut started in January, but LG now confirms that roll-out will occur in Q2 — beginning with Japan and rolling out to North Korea and the US after. Can't wait to get your hands on the mega-phone? LG will the Optimus G Pro at their brand's Mobile World Congress booth in Hall 3.

Samsung Galaxy S4: The next flagship could set sail March 14

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

HTC may be planning to unveil its new flagship phone this week, but many Android lovers are already shoving the expected HTC One out of the way in anticipation that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will descend from the heavens and into the hands of a growing legion of Samsung fanbois next month.
Or it might just be unveiled at an event in New York City on March 14.

That's the updated rumor out this morning from Russian analyst and rumor-meister Eldar Murtazin via Sammobile. Murtazin's scoops have a mixed track record of coming true, but this one is only one day earlier than a previously reported debut date for successor to the beloved Galaxy S3.
CNET learned earlier this month that Samsung does not plan to drop the new head honcho of the Galaxy line at next week's Mobile World Congress, apparently preferring that the S4 be the belle of its own media ball.
Some of the rumored specs from Sammobile for the Galaxy S4 include an Exynos 5 Octa (8-Core) CPU, Mali-T678 (8-Core) GPU, 4.99-inch SuperAMOLED display, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capability, 2-megapixel front facing camera, and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

But that's not all. There's also a separate rumor that the GS4 will be followed by a "Mini" version in May. At this rate the Galaxy lineup may soon have more stars than the Milky Way.

Google Now Update Aims To Make Google's Assistant Part Of Your Regular Routine

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 13 Februari 2013 0 komentar
google now

Google Now, the search giant's Android-based virtual assistant, is getting a suite of new features that aim to make the tool an even more engrained part of people's daily routines.

The assistant, which seeks to anticipate what information people will need before they've even asked for it, is giving users the option to put the app front and center on their phones for faster -- and, Google no doubt hopes, more regular -- access.

Currently, people have to unlock their phones and swipe their phone's home screen to view the assistant's customized list of "cards," which present personalized updates on sports scores, traffic, nearby tourist attractions, recommended restaurants and reminders, among other types of information.

Google Now's most recent update will allow users to check in with the assistant directly from their lockscreen or homescreen and to save their most frequently-accessed "cards" for easy reference.
"For me personally, this has increased my usage of my own product," said Google Now co-creator Baris Gultekin.

"The new Google Now widget brings all your important Now cards to your home or lock screen, so you don't even have to open the app," Google wrote in a blog post introducing the new look.

Google Now already sends alerts to users when it deems there's urgent information they should see, though Gultekin notes Google tries to use the alert system sparingly. For example, Google Now can tap into a person's calendar, Gmail correspondence and location information, along with Google's own mapping data, to warn someone there's bad traffic on her route to the office that will make her late for a key meeting.

"With Google Now, our goal is to have the computers do the hard work so you don't hve to deal with all the details and you can focus on the things that matter to you in life," said Gultekin. "This is search not with a keyboard, but with your context. We're providing information based on your situation, so you don't even have to search."

Google Now is also being integrated with Rotten Tomatoes in order to put movie reviews alongside trailers and showtime information, Google announced Wednesday. In addition, the assistant will sync with real estate site Zillow so it can alert prospective homebuyers to houses in their area that are on the market. While visiting an open house, Google Now can use a person's location -- paired with Zillow's database -- to push them information about the home they're visiting.

Xperia Z front-facing camera demoed; results are surprisingly good [Video]

We have seen plenty of sample photos and video footage from the Sony Xperia Z’s 13.1MP Exmor RS camera. However, we have seen very little of its 2.2MP Exmor R front-facing camera. The video below looks to change that, showing both some sample video and stills from the camera. The results are surprisingly good for a front-facing camera, meaning you should get some great results when using Skype or Google Hangouts.

Google Has Effectively Killed Adblock Plus In Android 4.2.2

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

A small change in Android 4.2.2 has left the biggest ad-blocking app on Android basically dead in the water. Adblock Plus is one of the web's most popular ad-blocking tools, and has been available for Android since November of last year. So, why has Google effectively killed it? Security issues.

Adblock Plus relies on the internet permission in Android to function, but it relies on a rather specific subset of that permission in order to work: the ability to automatically set a device's proxy server to 'localhost.' As is pointed out on a thread in the Android issues section of Google Code, this is a pretty serious security flaw. Allowing any app with the internet permission to change a device's proxy settings could lead to phishing abuse or compromised privacy.

What this means for Adblock, which automatically changes a device's proxy settings when activated, is a lot more work. If Adblock can't automatically set the proxy, that means the user will have to do so manually. And for the average Adblock user, this probably means just not using the app anymore.
Adblock seems to be taking the news relatively well, though there's obviously some frustration. The company's lead developer had this to say:
This fix has made it impossible for Adblock Plus to automatically set the proxy for the current active connection. From a security perspective it makes sense but it has a significant, negative impact on everyone who uses our app. While in Android 2.x the proxy was globally configured for all connections, this changed with Android 4.x which requires to individually set a proxy for each Wi-Fi connection. In addition to that the proxy has to be set each time a user connects to a network and the process of changing those settings is not very user-friendly.
There is not much we can do right now except making the process as simple and as smooth of an experience for our users as possible. We hope for another update from Google with their next Android release to provide us with an appropriate API so that our app can work even better on non-rooted devices.
Given that only a very small subset of Android devices are even running Android 4.2.2 at this point (and it will likely remain that way a while yet), Adblock still has time to try to figure out a workaround to this problem. For now, the only solution the company is aware of is described here, though that's still a lot of taps that I'm guessing the average person won't want to bother with.

Box is back giving new users 50GB free cloud storage

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
The race for who is the best cloud storage option around has never been tighter. Some of the popular options here on Android are Dropbox and Box.net, with Google Drive still in there somewhere. Today Box is back offering more incentive for users to go their route, by delivering new users 50GB of cloud storage absolutely free. You can never have too much so read on for more details.

P1090371-540x303

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen awesome deals like this from Box, but now that it’s back and available for basically anyone we figured it was worth mentioning. Previously Box was giving 50GB to all LG and Sony smartphone users that downloaded and signed up with the mobile app, but today it is for any new customer.

Basically just head to the sign up page and register an account and you’ll receive 50GB of free cloud storage. That is certainly more than Dropbox offers new customers. For those diehard Dropbox users, we’re with ya, but it never hurts to have another option and extra storage for when you’re in need. It only takes a few minutes so I’d hurry and get it done.

Their Android app was recently updated and improved, and now allows uploads of to 250mb sizes at a time, previously it was only a 100mb limit. They’ve continued to update and improve their app, they offer large file uploads, and now you’ll get 50GB of free storage. Can’t beat that right? Head to the Google Play Store and get the Android app and enjoy that free space.

New screenshot shows HTC G2 running Sense 5

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

HTC
Just last week we reported that the HTC M7 would feature a cleaner, simplified look with Sense 5.0. Now a new screenshot allegedly taken from the upcoming lower-end HTC G2 seems to reconfirm Sense 5′s new design.

This isn’t the first time that screenshots of HTC Sense 5 have supposedly hit the net, but it certainly does seem to follow the same design pattern we’ve seen before, albeit slightly scaled down to fit the 320 x 480 display in the HTC G2. More than likely we will learn more at MWC later on this month, or perhaps even at next week’s HTC One event.

HTC G2

For those wondering about the HTC G2, there isn’t much to be excited about. The G2 is a basic 1GHz single-core smartphone with a 3.5-inch display.
The real news here is the change in the UI, not that it supposedly comes from the G2. What do you think of the new UI when compared to the current version of Sense? Like it or not?

SwiftKey Flow Beta app update brings a long list of fixes

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The latest update for SwiftKey Flow Beta has arrived. The app, as implied by the name, remains in beta which means those looking to play with the latest will need to download the APK file from the SwiftKey website. This update has brought the app up to version 4.0.0.99 and it can be found in two versions — one for smartphones and one for tablets. The smartphone version is 5.8MB in size and the tablet version is 6.6MB in size.

Os6YETZ-dEvUl910C3d08Y66zDZJ7Lf0a8cYI_s4ID8-540x2661

Basic details out of the way, lets get into what this update has brought, and yes, it is a decent sized list of fixes. The list begins with a fix for crash that was happening when changing keyboards and goes on to mention a fix for the force close issue on clicking the language update and “other” crashes. It was also noted that the “majority” of non-English punctuation problems should now be resolved.

This update also brought a new look for the installer, which will now match the SwiftKey Flow colors and include an introduction video as well as making sure the Chrome Beta app performs like Chrome and reduced memory usage of settings. Other notable items include having the microphone key disabled in fields where voice input is not supported and more to include replacing “learnt” with “learned” in the US English personalization page. You can check out the complete list of changes on the SwiftKey Flow blog.

Otherwise, while there was quite a few fixes, there are also still some issues. For example, the known issues list includes items such as the flowing words sometimes resulting in surprising capitalizations, crashing when looking at the heatmap and predictions sometimes going blank when switching between languages. With that, those looking to give this latest beta release some testing can grab the APK files using the link below.

BlueStacks Brings Over 750,000 Android Applications To Windows 8 And Surface Pro

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

BlueStacks, the startup bringing Android applications to PCs and Macs, is today releasing a version of its App Player software optimized for new Surface Pro PCs and others running Windows 8. The move comes on the heels of key distribution agreements with several companies in the PC ecosystem, including AMD, Asus, MSI, and most recently, Lenovo. The various deals will see BlueStacks’ software preloaded onto over 100 million PCs in 2013, BlueStacks previously announced.

We’re now also hearing that the startup is talking with Dell and HP about similar deals.
Today’s release of the App Player for Surface Pro is the first time the BlueStacks software has been supported on the Windows 8 operating system – and it comes at a critical time for Microsoft, whose Surface devices are suffering from lackluster sales, amid incongruous reports of “amazing” customer response and sold out inventories.

With BlueStacks, customers can now run 750,000+ Android applications on their Windows computers, which is a big leap up from the some 35,000 apps currently available in the Windows 8 app store.
“The Surface Pro is an innovative device, but it has none of the top apps,” says BlueStacks CEO, Rosen Sharma. “This fixes that and adds a lot of value for buyers.”

BlueStacks-Charm-Menu-for-Win8-from-Home (1)

To customize the software for the new OS, BlueStacks now offers the ability to launch the Player from a tile pinned to the Windows 8 Start screen, and it includes a true full-screen mode. In earlier Windows 7 releases, that was not the case, as the software had left room for the BlueStacks control strip at the bottom of the screen. There’s also a new “Charms” menu, available on the right side of the screen, where the Back, Menu, Settings and Home buttons (for Android) are provided.

Android apps use the tilt and motion sensor of the Surface Pro/Windows 8 tablet to re-orient their display to portrait or landscape mode accordingly.

BlueStacks-Charm-Menu-for-Win8-from-App

“We have had a lot of people write us that they were on the fence about getting a Surface Pro, and were waiting for something like this,” John Gargiulo, BlueStacks VP of Marketing and Biz Dev, tells us.

The company has now passed 5 million downloads of its mobile software across both Mac and PC, based on numbers from BlueStacks.com’s homepage. However, its OEM partners have not yet revealed their numbers, only reporting “healthy” adoption rates.

BlueStacks today is also paying tribute to Google’s “Get Your Google Back” campaign promoting the Google Windows 8 application, with its own take – GetYourAppsBack.com. From this website, Windows 8 users can download both the App Player and Android apps.

According to LG, the second coming of the L Style adds Seamless Layout, Laser Cut Contour, Radiant Rear Design and Smart LED Lighting (the button at the bottom has a lighted edge) design elements to the beauty of the original phones. Other than screen size, the different versions will also feature different batteries, ranging from 2,460mAh in the largest to 1,540mAh in the smallest.

The L7II will be first to launch and has the most details, with specs listing a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8225 CPU, up to 4GB internal storage, 768MB RAM and a microSD slot, plus WVGA IPS screen and 8MP rear / VGA front camera setup. The dual-SIM version seen in earlier leaks will debut in Russia this week with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board, availability for the other new phones will be announced later. The full rundown of new features and a pair of pictures are after the break, while you check those we'll keep an eye out for any more surprises from LG before the show floor opens in Barcelona.
